A month-long pop-up at Birmingham’s Market at Pepper Place is spotlighting female culinary talent

For the 7th consecutive year, the Market at Pepper Place has teamed up with the Birmingham chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier International to celebrate women in the city’s food and beverage scene.

Since the beginning of September, the organization of women leaders in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry has partnered with the Market at Pepper Place for the “Les Dames Market Takeover,” a month of promoting female chefs, food makers, culinary instructors, and cookbook authors who are Les Dames d’Escoffier members and also work in the Birmingham hospitality scene.

Each week this month, a theme will highlight the specialties of different Dames. Female chefs will host the market’s chef demo at 9 a.m. each Saturday and throughout the morning, members of Les Dames d’Escoffier will host a tent with a selection of baked goods related to the week’s theme. Proceeds from the sale of the goods will fund the Les Dames d’Escoffier cooking and nutrition instruction outreach program at The Wellhouse, an organization that aids female victims of sex trafficking.

This year’s Les Dames Market Takeover kicked off on Sept. 2 with a spotlight on Dames known for BBQ, tailgate dishes and catering, featuring a chef demo by Geri-Martha O’Hara of Big Spoon Creamery. The rest of the month will feature sweet treats, Mediterranean, and Latin food.

The Market at Pepper Place is free and welcome to the public. The market runs from 7 a.m. to noon every Saturday, rain or shine.
